You should arrive at the salon with your hair freshly cleansed (within the past 24 hours) and styled using products you normally use to achieve your best curls. It is super important for your hair to be completely down and free of any dents, clips, hair ties, pins, or other accessories. Please be sure your hair is totally detangled (not brushed out) and dry, otherwise, you may be charged a detangling or drying fee, or asked to reschedule your appointment. Feel free to bring us pictures to use as a reference point (especially for big style changes) - we love photos!
Yes, and you’re going to LOVE IT! The best way to both enhance and preserve shape is to cut each curl right where they live. Dry-cutting is a tried and true curly hair technique that works by maximizing the amount of natural texture. We may even ask you to flip your hair upside-down while we cut it…
Are you suuure it’s straight? At least 70% of the world’s population has texture in their hair, so you may be surprised what a little attention, water, product, and curl-love can bring out! We enjoy working with curls of all shapes and sizes from the slightest wave to the tightly coiled.
For our “straight”-y’s, we recommend one of the many fantastic salons in the Greater Portland area. Give us a call if you’re in a bind.
Well, first and foremost, put down the straightener; it only takes one time to substantially damage your curls!!
But TBH, we’ve all been there. We’re never going to judge you for flat-ironing your curls but we will do everything we can to encourage you to stop (like, now). We want you to love your hair without the need to manipulate it.
Our Curl Bootcamp appointments are designed to be as preparatory as they are educational, meaning, this is our version of a consultation. Bootcamps give our curlistas the opportunity to learn about you and your curls; from the products and techniques you currently use to your innermost hair goals, we want to know it all. We’ll simultaneously provide you with an understanding of our own trusted brands and methods.
We suggest a bootcamp for all new clients as it is a solid place to start no matter where you are on your curl journey.
For most hair types we recommend trimming your curls once a season to prevent breakage, however, we’ll talk detailed timelines when you’re in the salon as this is very specific to your curl type.
We ❤️ teaching our clients! Every appointment has an educational component where we’ll show you how to work with your particular curl, from washing to styling to sleeping to our latest tips. We want you to look and feel good at our salon, but we also want you to be able to use the techniques at home to fall more and more in love with your curls every day.
We are proud to be a team-based salon. In fact, you will most likely be serviced by each member of our team while you’re here! Not only does this structure demonstrate and cultivate our supportive and educational culture, but it also ensures your time with us will be comfortable, efficient, and informational.
Come one, come all - we welcome (and love!) curlies of every age and gender. Our passion is to inspire you and your curls to be your authentic self no matter what your identity is. Please refer to our services page for details.
OK, we admit it: WE’RE SUPER CURL NERDS! Part of our values includes our team’s promise to continually pursue education. In addition to our stylists being State of Maine certified, our entire team regularly participates in (and on occasion facilitates) training with Curly Hair Artistry, Curly World, devachan, Innersense, Strategies, and so many more. If there is a curly class out there, we want to attend!
As with many things in life, the practices and understandings relative to curly hair are ever-evolving. We believe it is our role to never stop learning and sharing our knowledge with you.
Check out our team page for individual profiles including education, experience, and our individual thoughts on continued education.

We love learning about and working with clean, organic, and/or environmentally focused product-lines; please reach out for more information, or to inquire about providing samples for us to try. Bonus points if you cater specifically to curlies!
Yes. Not only are our team members magical hair gurus, but in our spare time, we’re also talented cosmetologists and all-around make-up/beauty/product obsessors. We’d love to make your special occasion even more special - get in touch with us for more information!
Please note that due to a ~busy~ schedule and always-growing waitlist, weekend and evening availability is limited (particularly in the holiday and summer seasons). We appreciate you giving us plenty of advanced notice at the time of your booking inquiry.

In the past, the Curl Boutique has participated in Westbrook Together Days, Halloween on Main Street, Coats for Kids, and the Maine Women Magazine Expo, and we have collaborated with Curly Hair Artistry, Curly World, Innersense Beauty, The Loft Hair Studio, and Oasis Hair Salon.
Additionally, we welcome individuals and teams interested in educational classes or shadowing at our salon to reach out for more information.
We love where we work and the people we work with! Visit our Opportunities page for job openings and other information about our team-based salon.
